Discussion of exam paper

  • Setting and Locations:
The locations chosen by numerous filmmakers and photographers have often proved critical in creating mood and establishing meaning. The director Yasujiro Ozu used the interiors of Japanese homes to reflect the formality of domestic and family relationships that interested him. When photographing objects, Walker Evans emphasised the context of the room or street in which they were located. Irving Penn severely limited the space available for his models when creating his corner portraits series. Produce your own response, making reference to appropriate work by others.

  • The sky:
Observations of clouds and skylines have produced inspirational for many photographers and filmmakers. Stephan shore and Edward Steichen photographed clouds at various times of the day. In the film Mistaken Memories of Mediaeval Manhattan, Brain Eno produced a time-lapse sequence of New York filmed in a vertical format, with buildings silhouetted against a drifting atmosphere sky. In the photo-book Solitude of Ravens, Masahisa Fukase produced evocative images of bird in flight against dramatic skies. Produce your own response, making reference of appropriate work by others.

Fukase's photos create connotations of a dark and harsh sky. The introduction of ravens presents an atmosphere of death and eerie feelings. I like the look of this because the black and white effect creates negative space and an different tones. This could link to Ansel Adams zones system. One thing that i like about Fukase's work is that it presents an olden photo effect and some- like the top right- look as if they may have been taken on film and burned and dodged whilst developed.

When researching Edward Steichien, i liked how he took some photos above clouds and presented the sky from a non everyday view. This creates a more effective look into the sky and presents a unique view. Although his photos did inspire me to look into the shape of clouds, i believed his technique and approach to the topic was a approach that could be hard due to my limit to fly above the clouds.

Stephen Shore is the artist that i have taken inspiration from the most. This is because i like how his angle and composition didn't just limit his photos to just the skyline, he also presented landscapes and unique places. I also like how his photos were not black and white and presented colour. I wanted to take this approach in my research as i would love to be able to capture the sunset or sunrise with different bright tones, like shown in my Component 1.
